Big clusters in the west

Kemps Creek, Eastern Creek, Huntingwood, Erskine Park, Horsley Park. Macquarie Park sits separately to the north as the basin's sixth major cluster.

Kemps Creek total capacity

Six sites at Kemps Creek total roughly 2 GW: 400 MW operating today plus 1.57 GW announced or under construction. At that draw, one cluster would consume the equivalent of around 4.5 million Sydney homes.

Where the heat hurts hardest.

Sydney V2 heat-vulnerability composite (recency-weighted). Adapts the Harlan 2013 Maricopa length-of-residency factor; the Phoenix-area academic HVI literature (Harlan 2013, Chuang and Gober 2015, Reid 2009) is the methodology backbone. Hex fill = sensitivity V2 (deprivation index × housing stress × canopy × recency-of-arrival). Click a hex for the full neighbourhood read; click an LGA row to focus the map there. Use the dropdown bottom-right to filter to a single LGA.

Data-coverage note: regional-fringe LGAs (Lithgow, Central Coast, Mosman, Wollongong) may show n/a for canopy and/or population where the upstream joins (per-LGA canopy %, Greater Sydney population) don't extend to them. V2 sensitivity is calculated from underlying factors (recency, deprivation, housing stress) which is why a fringe LGA like Lithgow can still rank high (0.91) despite the supplementary gaps. We'll close these gaps as the regional data sources catch up.

Canopy & biodiversity ·basin view

Where the trees and species are, and where they aren't.

Toggle the underlay between canopy coverage and biodiversity survey status. The list down the left ranks LGAs by their gap to a published canopy target (most behind first); only 17 of the 37 basin LGAs publish a target. Click a hex for the full neighbourhood read.

Methodology note: canopy % here is per-LGA cover from NSW DPHI 2022 mesh-block data and includes national parks, rural land and bushland reserves. Council urban-forest strategies usually quote urban-area-only figures, which are lower (e.g. Hornsby council reports ~39% urban vs ~80% LGA-wide; Sutherland ~25% urban vs ~66% LGA-wide). Both readings are correct; they measure different things.

Largest published-target shortfall in the basin: Camden sits at 11.6% canopy against a 40% target. Blacktown is next, 25.9pp behind its 40% target at 14.1% canopy today.

Roughly 1,550 of 3,678 hex cells have been physically surveyed by BioNet. Around 775 are inferred from neighbouring hexes; the remainder are lacking data.
